About the members

Roy Roy Brown is a powerful vocalist and a total extrovert. He is as likely to be out in the middle of the crowd, or jumping up on tables as being on stage! He is also a talented pianist and songwriter. Having fronted Elation Foundation in Auckland, and Beat Not Fish in Napier, Roy spent time in Melbourne where he released two albums of original music. He also played in a jazz band in Auckland called Schreiber and Co, where he met bass player Marty.

Marty Marty Forrer plays the double bass, often called a doghouse, a bull fiddle, or a slap bass. Strung with gut strings, it is played slap style to achieve that clicketty-click sound heard on old Bill Haley records. Marty has played with many top jazz artists as well as playing bass guitar in rock bands, and even spent four years in a latin-American band in Auckland. While other guys drink, go to a casino, or party, his spare time is spent building traditional style hotrods and custom cars, the current project being a 1955 Plymouth. How rock 'n' roll is that?!

Dennis Drummer Dennis Maunder used to play in Roy's band Beat Not Fish. Playing drums since age five, Dennis has a long history of drumming for the NZ Army Band, followed by the NZ Navy Band, also the Queen City Big Band and the Hawkes Bay Jazz Club Big Band. Dennis also holds an aircraft pilot's license, and has twice represented New Zealand at the World Roller Skating Championships!

Tex Tex Gretsch, AKA Ian Morris, plays big red guitar! On leaving school he formed New Zealand's iconic rock band Th' Dudes and wrote and co-wrote some of the country's best-loved songs, among them Bliss, Right First Time, and Walking in Light. As a record producer he worked with such notable NZ artists as the Warratahs, Dave Dobbyn, and Greg Johnson, and even manufactured a Number 1 hit for himself under the monicker Tex Pistol!

Kim And if you'd like to make your special event extra special, Black Snapper are proud to invite Kim Willoughby to join them for a set of songs. Kim is a member of When the Cat's Away, New Zealand's favourite all-girl band, and still the holders of concert attendance records up and down the country.
